<image:caption>Daily’s Fit and Fresh Restaurant La Jolla, California Daily’s Fit and Fresh Restaurant emphasizes fresh and healthy foods cooked over a rotisserie, served in “fast-food” restaurant style. A prototype design was developed that could easily be either realized as a freestanding building, or contained within an existing storefront or a leased mall space. The interior is designed to reflect the uniqueness of the restaurant and create a comfortable environment in which to enjoy a quick meal. The design moves patrons along a series of “buildings,” or ordering points, to the checkout zone before finding a table at which to sit. Colors and materials were chosen that are warm and subdued and that also would stand up to the demands of vigorous daily cleaning.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Kensington Remodeling</image:title>
<image:caption>Kensington Remodeling Kensington, California Published: Sunset Magazine This project occurred in several phases. John Hudson Thomas designed this Tudor Craftsman style residence in 1926. In the first phase, the Owners wanted to remodel the kitchen, laundry, and servant areas while preserving the integrity of this landmark home. They also wanted to open up the walls to views of their heavily wooded site and the San Francisco Bay. The design of the ground level spaces called for demolishing the existing four small rooms and creating one large kitchen/family room with separate laundry and bath areas. Large windows were placed along the south and west sides of the kitchen/family room. Details (windows, doors, trim, and hardware) were replicated from existing elements and made by local craftsmen. Exterior work included new patios and landscaping. The second phase called for the renovation/remodeling of the Master Bedroom Suite and other spaces on the upper level of the home. This effort reorganized existing spaces and added new areas within the residence’s envelope. New windows, skylights, finishes, lighting and audio visual elements were incorporated into the design of the project. The design integrates contemporary equipment and fixtures, creating a melding of old and new without disturbing the beauty of the original John Hudson Thomas design.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Corte Madera Residence Racquetball Court, Guest House and Cabana Corte Madera, California The racquetball court/guest house and pool cabana were a part of a series of new structures that Stein Architects designed on this 8-acre estate. Other projects, including renovation of the main house and a new garage and music building were designed but not completed. The construction is located in a secluded area of the property. The court is built into a hill, with hilltop entry serving both court and guest suite. The structure is a large rectangular box with only one exterior side exposed. The design carves away at the front elevation, recessing the entry under a heavy trellis supported by pergola elements similar to those at the existing main house. This pergola/trellis is present at the pool-level cabana, extending in front of the box of the cabana. The cabana contains a full kitchen and has a shower area in the rear.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Commercial Offices Western Pacific Passenger Station Oakland, California The Western Pacific Railroad’s Oakland passenger station was built in 1910. After train service ended and the last California Zephyr passed through, the building became a cultural center, then a discotheque, then a warehouse space, and finally, offices. Significant detailing both inside and outside had been removed by the time our design effort began. The building was broken up into a series of offices, with a discrete street entrance for each individual tenant. Large windows and skylights allow daylight to flood the offices. Bright colors were introduced and play off the original subdued neutral station walls. Current seismic and disability code requirements were integrated into the renovation of the building.</image:caption>

Designed by David Farquharson and constructed in 1873, South Hall is a Registered National Landmark. Its primary classroom, Room 202, now known as the “Flex Lab,” has served as a science laboratory, library, and lecture hall over time. The challenge was to transform the “Flex Lab” into a hi-tech media space that would gain federal design approvals for new construction within a historic structure. The solution was a large, freestanding, unattached “cabinet” making alteration of the existing structure unnecessary. Our cutting-edge technical solution to computer and long-range-conferencing needs also provides a space that can be used when national and international leaders give talks at the University. Large-screen projectors and an audio system are built in. Wireless networking as well as ethernet jacks and power monuments are distributed throughout the area. Tables and chairs can be quickly reconfigured to accommodate lectures and group collaborations.</image:caption>

A Request for Qualifications was put out to all chapter members and Stein Architects was selected to undertake the design of the chapter’s new offices. The 2,700-square-foot space was programmed and designed to provide a meeting space for over 125 members at one time. A separate, small meeting space for the chapter’s executive committee was placed between the executive director’s office and the large meeting space. Banquet and kitchen facilities were designed to facilitate these meetings. Support staff and storage areas were provided.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Oakland 1 Residence</image:title>
<image:caption>Oakland 1 Residence Oakland, California Published: Sunset Magazine This house is located on a steep downslope. The Owner requested an inexpensive, minimalist, “hi-tech” home with traditional East Bay plywood cladding. He also wanted a house that was simple in its plan organization. The least expensive solution was to build a home with a narrow, rectangular foundation locked into solid rock with “shear keys” as opposed to pier foundations. With this in mind, a 23’ x 71’ building evolved with garage and bedrooms on the upper level and living spaces on the lower level. The house is organized into four vertical bands of circulation: decks and entry on the east exterior band, then stairs, then horizontal circulation on each level, and finally, rooms on the west side of the house. Simple white gypsum walls and carpet are used throughout the house.</image:caption>

A central vertical circulation system complete with elevator allows for a totally accessible path of travel into and throughout the house. The site is a downslope with views to the hills and San Francisco Bay. The design is horizontally expressed so that the plan terraces down the hillside, taking advantage of the views. The house is a series of horizontal extensions of the hillside, becoming a series of carved boxes expressed in different claddings of stucco and wood that break down the mass and bulk of the home. <image:title>Congregation Beth Jacob Mikvah</image:title>
<image:caption>Beth Jacob Congregation New Mikvah Oakland, California A Mikvah or Mikveh is a ritual bath design in strict accordance with the Jewish laws of immersion, where one regains family or ritual purity after certain events have occured. The stationary water in a Mikvah is partially from a "natural" source, such as a spring, groundwater wells, or rainwater, and must always be in contact with the original source of water. Immersion in water has always been an important part of Judaism, for it symbolizes a change in status, a transformation or a purification. Jewish women will immerse in waters after their menstruation period or childbirth and before resuming sexual relations. Men and women, when converting to Judaism, will also immerse in a Mikvah. In addition, there are requirements regarding the amount of “natural” water in the bath, where the Mikvah is located, how the water is stored and how the water is moved to the bath, among other things. This new Mikvah design project supplements the original inaccessible Mikvah, bath and shower areas built in 1954, and will be used by women only. The project has a graywater collection system on the roof of the existing building to move “natural” rainwater to the Mikvah. The Mikvah has an ozone filtration and heating system that completely disinfects and warms the water allowing for a sanitized immersion experience. An adjacent restroom for the Congregation’s pre-school children was also constructed. Both the Mikvah and pre-school restroom were designed to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disability Design Standards as well as California's accessibility requirements.</image:caption>

<image:caption>City Building Inc. Offices Pier 26 Annex North San Francisco, California This 13,000-square-foot office and warehouse space, situated directly below the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, is home to one of San Francisco’s premiere construction firms. The project was part of the Port of San Francisco’s pier revitalization program replacing maritime with commercial uses in waterfront spaces that had been vacant for years. The new interior space is colorful, vibrant, and flooded with light from restored clerestory windows and skylights. The existing wood trusses and ceiling members retain their worn state and contrast with the new walls and cabinetry that are finished in bright colors and natural wood finishes. All interior work is free standing within the 33’-0” high space. The entry lobby soars up to the roof; and the Owners’ offices within the clerestory zone command spectacular views of the bay on all sides. The path of travel from the lobby leads to new office and warehouse spaces. Conference rooms and employee zones have large windows open to the bay.</image:caption>

The building has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, No. 81000143 and is also the City of Berkeley Landmark #48. The building was designed by Albert C. Schweinfurth, who unconventionally utilized Shingle Style architecture, normally seen in homes of that period, to the construction of this church. Other noteworthy design items include the use of industrial-style metal sash windows, sections of redwood tree trunks as pillars, a strong horizontal emphasis, and a semicircular apse with a conical roof. We have undertaken design work in conjunction with Dillingham Landscape Architects and the project includes the rehabilitation of the existing main entry porch, vestibule and doors, along with an accessible path of travel to the building and entry.    </image:caption>

<image:caption>Bank of America Facilities San Francisco International Airport San Francisco, California Published: Interiors Magazine Bank of America leased three small spaces (ranging from 42 to 607 square feet) at San Francisco International Airport. The development of the design solution was based on the undulating soft forms that were present in the renovated Central Terminal. Because these facilities were quite small and spread out over the terminal building, it was necessary to develop a strong identity program for the Bank. This was accomplished through the use of consistent facade imagery, colors, and materials. The facades were treated as sculptural elements to complement the soft lines of the terminal, and to stand out from the “hard” storefronts of nearby tenants. The facades were similar in that all cornices sat on a series of tubular forms, and were strongly expressed with lighting emitted from behind the layered bands and countertops.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oakland Hebrew Day School Oakland, California The Oakland Hebrew Day School is a private, non-profit elementary school. The new structure is a 28,000-square-foot building built on a technically challenging site. Bedrock under the southern portion of the building is 60 feet below the surface, whereas the rock underneath the northern portion of the school is approximately 15 to 20, making for a complicated foundation system. The new building is a double-loaded corridor system with simple spans and efficient mechanical and electrical systems. Conventional stick construction with a stucco skin provided a very malleable surface within a reasonable budget. Molded masses, planes, and extensions were used to break out of the rectangular scheme, giving relief to what otherwise would be a conventional box. Large openings in the walls bring framed views of the San Francisco Bay and Oakland hills into each classroom, while decks off the library and religious studies areas offer contemplative vistas of the adjacent landscape.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Oakland 1 Remodeling</image:title>
<image:caption>Oakland 1 Remodeling Oakland, California This residence, built in 1967, was perhaps one of the most poorly designed homes in the Montclair area of Oakland. It had never been remodeled. The program was to upgrade the existing façade and interior public space (entry, living/dining room area and stairs to other levels). To minimize construction costs no interior reconfigurations of the existing rooms occurred. Existing doors and windows were replaced with energy efficient wood windows, and a minimum amount of replacement of the existing T-111 siding occurred. New landscaping between the street and house was a part of the redesign effort. The before and after design changes are visually significant.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Piedmont Remodeling Piedmont, California This is a small remodeling of an existing 1906 shingle house. In addition to interior projects such as kitchen and bathroom work, the Owners wanted to remodel the front porch area that had been redesigned in the 1960s with metal post columns and metal railings. Our solution is to reuse the existing columns by enclosing them within new battened and shingled columns, and to provide new wood railings.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Landscape Architecture Offices</image:title>
<image:caption>Landscape Architecture Offices Building Renovation Concord, California A firm consisting of landscape architects and contractors wanted to expand and move their offices into a standard concrete tilt-up office park building. They needed a design that would serve as a showcase to promote their business and at the same time, warehouse their landscape contracting equipment. The solution was an adaptive re-use of the structure, containing 3,800 square feet of office space and 5,200 square feet of warehouse space. The design provided freestanding “pavilions,” or offices within the “landscape” (the enclosed building space and floor), conceptually creating an urban park. Construction materials consisted of natural and recycled building items, which were pulled together with bright and vibrant painted concrete floors and stained and painted wood walls.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Piedmont 1 Remodeling</image:title>
<image:caption>Piedmont 1 Remodeling Piedmont, California Frederick Reimers, a well-known architect responsible for the design of many fine Piedmont California homes, originally designed this residence in 1929. The master bath and bedroom had been remodeled several times over the years. Our task was to redesign the last remodeling from 1960. The Owners wanted the spaces to appear as if they were the house’s original rooms, but with current fixtures and materials. Therefore, the new spaces had to be harmonious with the rest of the existing home. Careful attention was paid to creating details similar to those of the original house, as well as using new materials that work well with existing finishes. The bathroom, bedroom, and dressing areas are finished in granite and marble, the walls are plaster, and cabinet and doors woods are Honduran Mahogany. Glass elements such as the shower door and light fixtures are custom designed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Fentons Creamery Oakland, California American Institute of Architects/East Bay Chapter Citation for Interiors An arson fire ravaged Fentons Creamery, a thriving community anchor and East Bay institution for over 100 years. The design effort was two-fold: recreate the charm of the classic Ice Cream and Soda Fountain, and update safety and manufacturing elements. Building, seismic, fire, and disabled access requirements had changed dramatically since Fentons opened; a manufactured “historic look” would not suffice. The circulation had to handle high customer volume while displaying the Fentons story and creamery and restaurant processes. The design streamlined ice-cream production and restaurant operations, making them visible to customers. An event and party room expanded dining capacity. The front entryway was opened to exterior seating, contributing to the vitality of pedestrian traffic on Piedmont Avenue. The meandering path of travel is expressed in the curved ice cream counter. Traditional elements—wainscoting, tile, and ceiling patterns—evoke the traditional soda fountain within a working ice creamery and restaurant.</image:caption>

      <image:title>1900 Addison Street</image:title>
<image:caption>1900 Addison Street Building Renovation Berkeley, California 1900 Addison Street is a designated City of Berkeley Landmark Building, originally designed by local Berkeley architect S.G. Jackson. The building was constructed in 1927 for the Scandinavian Vasa Order Framat Lodge #405. It is a Classical Revival style brick building with terra cotta detailing and trim. Our office was retained to update and bring visibility to this forgotten structure. The existing ground floor metal storefront fenestration was redesigned with wood elements to re-establish the 1927 construction. In addition, a new signage and graphics program was developed in order to bring life to the street frontage. The building was renovated for City of Berkeley offices and is now in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.</image:caption>

      <image:title>San Francisco Residence</image:title>
<image:caption>San Francisco Residence San Francisco, California This house is located in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco. It was built on a vacant lot and commands sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay from Oakland to the Golden Gate. The house is organized around a circulation pattern that clearly defines and separates public and private spaces. Four floors of activities place an in-law unit above the garage, a study above the in-law unit, living and dining spaces above that level, and finally a bedroom at the upper level. The street façade is the only exposure to the public. The vertical circulation element containing elevator and stairs is pushed to the front and forms a rounded buffer to the adjacent building. Horizontal elements, decks, and trellises spring off this vertical circulation, visually extending the building in the opposite direction. Bold white forms contrast the structure with adjacent residences built many years before construction of this home.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kensington Carriage House Kensington, California Published: Diablo Magazine This new carriage house is located on an estate that noted architect John Hudson Thomas designed in 1926 for the University of California Berkeley professor Joel Hildebrand and his family. The new structure was designed to respect the historic nature of the site and the original home. A design challenge was the creation of new spaces that feel contemporary and yet at the same time appear timeless. Particular attention was given to the exterior stuccowork, door and window trim, the staircase and its enclosing window fenestration, and interior and exterior roof structure details. The large windows, skylights, and expansive deck doors allow natural light to flood the house during the day. Similar to the adjacent original home, the new carriage house reflects Thomas’ interest in the “English Cottage style”, which made use of heavy, rough stucco, integrated gables with wood sheathing and large timber pieces.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Oakland 3 Residence</image:title>
<image:caption>Oakland 3 Residence Oakland, California This residence was designed for a young family who previously lived in a Tudor house in the Oakland hills. Stein Architects moved into a more traditional style in designing this 3,300 square foot home. The picturesque English Cottage movement, as typified by architect John Hudson Thomas, influenced the design of this house. The use of heavily applied, rough, beige stucco, with elements such as turrets and gables, shows the indebtedness to Thomas’s work. The interior spaces of the main level flow horizontally as well as curves to reflect the pie-shaped property. The two-story entry area contains the central staircase, detailed out in wood trees as pickets for the railings. Interior spaces make simple statements of the use of wood and veneer plaster walls.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Piedmont 2 Remodeling Piedmont, California This home is located on a large property in Piedmont. The residence is a Mediterranean style home with mature landscaping. The office was involved with several remodelings over the years in addition to the creation of a second unit. The project carefully blended new work with the existing home so that it appears as if the residence was never remodeled or additions were made to the original structure. Our initial design effort involved the remodeling of the facade of the house and the landscaping of the rear yard as decks and stair elements were added to the residence. Our second remodeling consisted of the design of the master bedroom and bathroom in addition to the children’s bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper level. A remodeling of the lower level family room was also completed during this phase. The front landscaped area of the house was redesigned in conjunction with Nancy Kent, Landscape Architect.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Film Studies Department Nestrick Theater, Film Theater at Dwinelle Hall University of California, Berkeley Berkeley, California The University of California at Berkeley Department of Film Studies offers an innovative interdisciplinary program leading to a BA in Film Studies. It offers rigorous, widespread engagement with the culture of moving-images, teaching students to think historically, theoretically and analytically about cinematic forms. The Film Program also offers a Ph.D. in film history and theory. The Nestrick Theater is the heart of the Department. The room was designed to meet ADA requirements, an ever-changing technical environment, and a demanding user population. Perhaps the most important criterion for the room was the creation of a space where film professionals can lecture and chat with university scholars and students. Lighting, acoustics, finishes, and circulation patterns played important roles in the design. The projection booth provides several methods of film presentation, from film nitrate originals to HDTV. Sliding blackboards in front of a whiteboard allows for different screen size configurations.

      <image:title>Atherton Remodeling</image:title>
<image:caption>Atherton Residence Atherton, California This home is located on a 2.2-acre estate in Atherton. The program called for a complete renovation of the existing main residence and pool house, which was designed in the 1920s. Several building additions were also included. The design solution created approximately 12,000 square feet of formal and informal living spaces for a family of five. New guest quarters, au pair apartment, gym and workout areas, and five-car subterranean garage were constructed, along with remodeling of the existing residence. Careful attention was paid to details and materials and the new work remains true to the aesthetic of the original Spanish Colonial residence.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Evans Hall New Rooftop Courtyard University of California, Berkeley Evans Hall at UC Berkeley was designed by Gardner Dailey and constructed in 1971. The building is home to the University’s Economics, Mathematics and Statistics Departments. Evans Hall has gone through many renovations and remodelings, some of which have involved seismic upgrades, water damage and improvements to the buildings aesthetics. This is an example of small project design that Stein Architect has done for UC Berkeley many times over the years. Along with Dillingham Associates, Landscape Architects, we addressed aesthetics, accessibility and fire exiting issues at the existing rooftop courtyard. A design program involving overhead “sails” for sun shading, new colors to brighten up the exterior building walls, new pavers over an innovative rooftop/courtyard waterproofing system, accessible exit doors and new area lighting.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ionic Building</image:title>
<image:caption>Ionic Building Oakland, California American Institute of Architects/City of Oakland Honor Award The Ionic Building is a renovation of the old “Loft Bar” in Oakland, which was a dark stained shingled building dating back to the 1920s. The building was originally a radio repair shop. The new mixed-use structure was built out to maximize Oakland’s zoning regulations by adding a second-floor extension at the front. This basic box was then carved out to provide a deck at the upper level and large multi-pane windows. Taking cues from other commercial buildings in the neighborhood, the facade became a white stucco industrialized element contrasted by bright red ionic columns.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oakland 2 Remodeling Oakland, California This residence was built in the wooded Montclair area of Oakland in the 1930s. It is a Tudor/Craftsman style house that had been remodeled several times. The Owners wanted to convert the non-code compliant basement area into habitable space that worked with the style of the existing house. The design involved new foundation and floor slab work in order to achieve allowable ceiling heights as well as a column-free space. The remodeled basement is now a family area accommodating a play area for the family’s two young sons as well as a multi-media center.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bay Property Group</image:title>
<image:caption>Bay Property Group Building Renovation Oakland, California Generally speaking, our remodeling work involves older traditional style buildings, but in this case our design effort involved converting an award winning contemporary medical building into office space housing a commercial realty company. Our challenge was to respect the modernist look of both the exterior and interior element while doing a major renovation. Stein Architects provided a new design that channeled the design intent of the existing building in a way that altered the medical spaces and minimized physical changes to office and support areas. All medical equipment and plumbing items were removed and new interior walls compatible with the existing spaces were created. The vibrant selection of interior colors was extended to the new work, and flooring materials were chosen that were similar to the existing carpeting and tile. New signage and exterior colors were created using the original architect’s interior color palette.</image:caption>
